She’s finally finished!
What started out as a weekend project ended up hitting the back-burner and taking quite a long time. But, y’all, it’s complete. And it’s pretty good!
It turned out exactly as I’d hoped, and I’m happy to show it to you now.
If you remember, we rent our apartment from my in-laws, and they have been so gracious to let me give the bathroom a little makeover. This project was very simple and only required painting the walls and vanity and hanging shelves and pictures.
Before we get to the reveal let’s remember how it looked when we moved in.
Before
My first step was to paint the walls white and the vanity black. The picture below was taken the day I finished painting.

And the after.

I debated on what kind of shelves I wanted. For a long time I thought I wanted floating wood shelves. But I kept thinking it was a bit more rustic than I wanted, not to mention they were a little pricey. I needed something simple, functional, and affordable.
On a trip to Home Depot we found these shelves and brackets by Rubbermaid of all brands. They were the perfect size and price and exactly the style I was going for. Similar brackets I kept finding online were over $40. These were $6 a piece. #winning
My baskets from Magnolia Market are the perfect fit, and I’m still in love with the Be You print from The Findery.
On the wall opposite the toilet I knew I wanted a large piece of art since I was removing the towel bar and leaving a giant blank space. The room was shaping up to be very “pretty” and though I adore pretty things, I needed something a little cheeky to give it some personality.
I had the idea to take a picture of the dogs in the tub together, blow it up to poster size and frame it. They both HATE having a bath so getting them in there together was impossible. I did get a good photo of each of them during a bath, but I was unable to blow them up bigger than a 5×7 without compromising the quality of the photo. However, the oversize mats in the black frames are the perfect compromise to the one large photo I originally wanted.
For the vanity I definitely wanted flowers. I have a pretty notorious black thumb and Hobby Lobby has beautiful florals, so I grabbed a few Ranunculus stems and put them in a thrift store vase. #boom #flowersforever
The other thing I’ve been searching high and low for is a dupe for a super expensive but super chic soap. It has an almost medicinal brown, glass bottle with a wordy label- Aesop is the brand, I think. I kept hearing the dupe was at Home Goods and TJ Maxx, but I never found it. Then God opened up the heavens and shined the light down on Costco! $10 for THREE 16oz brown, glass bottles with a wordy label! And when the soap runs out, I can refill with a different soap. #boom #prettysoapbottlesforever
Before and After at a glance.
I’m so pleased with my sweet little loo. It was a ton of fun to create a vision for this space and make it happen. My mother-in-law told me to get ideas for the powder room at her house, and I’ve been brainstorming for that project. Hopefully that will be coming to the blog sooner than later. If anyone else wants ideas on a space in their home, let me know. I’d love to have a look and help you come up with a design plan.
As I mentioned above, we rent the apartment so I didn’t want to put too much money into this project by changing out the light fixture and faucet. Not changing such big ticket items helped keep this bathroom makeover cost to right around $200. I’ve linked everything that was available online below for your shopping pleasure.
Thank you for coming back to the blog after my not-so-brief hiatus. I’m so happy to be back with this reveal. And anytime you’re downtown and need to tinkle, stop by and see the new bathroom! 🙂

AWESOME RE-DO! I LOVE EVERY SINGLE DETAIL!
Thank you, friend! 🙂
Nice job Elizabeth!!
Thank you! 🙂
To me the biggest, most profound change is painting the vanity black. It looks amazing and really sets the bar for everything else in the room. Really love the furry guys.
Agreed! It definitely added the most oomph.
