HAPPY GAME DAY!
In case you haven’t heard, today is the first Saturday of the college football season. And in case you’re reading this and don’t live in the deep south, it’s kind of a big deal.
I really fell in love with college football when I went to college. Groundbreaking stuff, I know. But it was the first time I was able to purchase season tickets and attend games on the regular, and it was awesome. I never missed a game my freshman year at Auburn, and that just so happened to be the year we went undefeated. It was 2004 and we were SEC champs. We also won the Sugar Bowl that year. It was something I’ll never forget.
Flash forward to 2010 when we won a National Championship and rolled our Christmas tree we purposefully left up in hopes that we’d pull out the W. So many good memories have been made from college football.
Let’s get to why you should love college football too.
- College Gameday
If you’re up this morning, chances are it’s already on the TV. It is here, and my husband isn’t even home. He’s working, and I turned it on all for myself. The segments are pretty fun, and the hosts make me laugh. Usually they’ll share some pre-recorded segment about a player that has defied the odds or done something remarkable that makes me cry, but those heart-warming stories are the best, aren’t they? Watch College Gameday on ESPN.
- Tailgating
I don’t do this nearly enough anymore. But when you’re in college or live in a college town, then tailgating happens on a weekly basis. It starts on Wednesday when the RVs start rolling in, and it often doesn’t end until late Sunday evening. It’s great fun to hang out with your friends under a tent on a Saturday in the south cooking and eating delicious food. It’s more fun when your tailgate has a TV on which to watch the game. And it’s even more fun when the weather is cool and you need blankets and sweaters to keep warm. That’s my favorite way to tailgate.
- Food
I can’t talk about game day without talking about the food. It has become somewhat of a tradition to watch the Auburn football game at my in-laws’ house. My father-in-law cooks something delicious on the grill, my mother-in-law cooks something delicious inside, and the rest of us bring something else to snack on too. I’ve got some pretty great tailgate recipes coming to the blog in September, so be on the lookout. And if you’ve ever tailgated with my brother or been to one of his football parties, you know the food is the star of the show.
I once went to one of his parties, and there was food covering all the counter tops and the dining table. So. Much. Food. He’s an excellent cook.
- Outfits
I’m pretty sure you can agree that dressing in your team colors or gear is all part of the fun of game day. Being an Auburn fan has been a pretty convenient thing these past few seasons because orange and blue were often paired together in fall collections of clothing companies. This year we’re seeing lots of purple and lavender, so you LSU girls are in luck. And it seems like olive green is everywhere right now. I’m not sure what team has that? UAB? I think they have green. You’re covered for cute clothes right now, too! Some of my favorite places to find cute game day options are boutiques. Locally, you’ll find great pieces at Wisteria Cottage
and True South.
LSU girls can find super cute game day options at Simply Chic Baton Rouge. (The rest of us can find super cute regular clothes there too! Their shoe game is strong!)
And for the men, Cambrian Ridge has some really nice collegiate shirts. Go get one for the man in your life while they’ve still got them!
- Baby Gear
I know adults get to wear fun clothes on game day, but those stinking baby clothes are downright precious.
- Team Pride- WAR EAGLE! That’s all.
- Fellowship
No matter where I’ve watched a football game or what teams were playing, if I was watching with friends and family, then I was having a great time. Getting together with the people you love to bond over a southern tradition like game day is good for your soul. So is going into your home stadium. It’s as if complete strangers become your family. To me, that’s the number one reason to love college football.
Why do you love it? Or do you hate it? Gasp! Tell me in the comments. And Happy Game Day!
