Each month I send out a Beautycounter Newsletter via email to my clients and to anyone else who would like to receive this newsletter. I thought that this month was so full of great information that it deserved its own blog post.
If you’ve been around here for a while and heard me talk about Beautycounter, then you understand the harmful ingredients that are in many of our personal care and beauty products have been linked to cancers and other illnesses. Did you know it’s also linked to early puberty in children, specifically young girls? I ran across some studies from Oxford Academic and Berkeley News that reported on the link between phthalates, parabens, and phenols in personal care products and the timing of puberty in boys and girls.
These endocrine disrupting chemicals have been shown to impact the timing of puberty in young girls.
However, a study in Berkeley News reported this exciting news: “Analysis of urine samples before and after a three-day trial in which the participants used the lower- chemical products found significant drops in levels of these chemicals in the body.” These chemicals being the parabens, phthalates, and phenols.
This is huge in the business of safer beauty and is precisely why we should be advocating for safer beauty with our state senators and representatives. We can all work together across both sides of the line to make regulation in the personal care industry happen. And while we wait, we can start using safer products to protect our children and ourselves.
Founder and CEO of Beautycounter Gregg Renfrew was recently interviewed for the New York Times. When asked about bringing regulation to the beauty and personal care industry she had this to say: “Most people still believe that the Food and Drug Administration is protecting them in terms of personal care products. And most people believe that the products on the market are safe. But the F.D.A. is not necessarily screening ingredients for safety, which is very different from the food industry. The F.D.A. can be protective of the consumer in certain industries, but in our industry, we are woefully underregulated, and they don’t have the power to recall products. And this is one area where you have bipartisan support. Everyone agrees that we need to update the laws. It’s be 80 years now.” Check out the whole article here.
